Do Hackers Spell The End of Cloud Based Solutions?

Not quite. It seems like every time something happens with Google, Microsoft, Amazon and now Sony we get a flurry of "this means the end of the cloud" articles like this latest one from Yahoo and Reuters. However, despite the article's provocative headline here's the money quote:

"The reality, however, is that the leading cloud providers have a very strong incentive to invest in the latest security technologies and processes -- and will arguably be more secure than most enterprises themselves."

The last line is the key. Many in the industry trust the engineers and data centers of Google, Microsoft and Amazon for good reason. They have an immense amount of financial resources and experts at their disposal. Far more than most companies. The only way to be 100% safe is to never put a computer on any network, including the internet. Oddly enough, that was a popular argument several years ago. Now most of us chuckle when we hear this. Is it possible we are seeing history repeat itself?

As we stated in our own recent post Cloud Computing: The Future or Marketing Hype, company executives need to take a hard look at what they can and cannot put in the cloud. Take another post of ours on the benefits of cloud based remote infrastructure monitoring. These arguments can apply to any number of difficult technologies.

The key to cloud adoption is to make decisions based on needs and core business goals, which is true for all things related to business. Of course we know there are many who disagree with us and we welcome healthy debate. Feel free to shout back in the comments section.
