Sun Explorer - More Than a Troubleshooting Tool

What is Sun Explorer? Most SUN administrators who have opened support tickets with SUN Microsystems are familiar with Explorer Data Collector. What they may not realize is that it is a great tool for establishing a baseline for any SUN environment. Explorer can be used for:

  • Taking configuration snapshots before applying changes
  • Archiving optimal system state
  • Comparing system files to identify changes in the environement with minimal time and effort
  • Restoring corrupted or missing files
In short, Explorer Data Collector is a great tool for performing complete diagnostics and for establishing a baseline for new or updated environments. A simple diff of the output can point out changes that would take even the most experienced administrators hours to identify. We recommend you run explorer on the environment when it makes sense to capture the current configuration, such as when it is running optimally or prior to making changes to the environment.
